BOTOX® Cosmetic
Non –Surgical Facial Rejuvenation
Ophthalmology was the first medical discipline to administer Botox treatments in the 1980’s to treat muscle spasms and other facial depressions. With FDA approval of Botox in 1989 as well as continued research, we are now seeing the rise of other dermal fillers. In this age of “ the desire to look and feel younger longer” Eye Doctors of Washington has embraced this cosmetic revolution by safely and effectively offering non-surgical facial fillers such as: BOTOX®, Radiesse and Juvederm in addition to our vision correction treatments.
BOTOX® Cosmetic was originally approved for the treatment of eye spasms and the correction of double vision or strabismus (lazy eye) in children during the 1980s. Since then it has been found to reduce wrinkles for smoother, younger looking skin. BOTOX® treatment is offered by Dr. Paul C. Kang and Dr. Susan Majlessi at our offices serving Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and surrounding areas to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and brow.
In addition to BOTOX® we offer:
What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic, manufactured by Allergan, Inc., is a purified protein derived from botulinum bacterium type A. When injected directly into overactive facial muscles, BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to relax the facial muscles, thereby reducing or eliminating the appearance of wrinkles.

Why go to an ophthalmologist for your BOTOX® treatment?
BOTOX® was originally introduced to the world in the 1980’s by ophthalmologists as a treatment for uncontrollable facial and eyelid spasms, as well as for eye muscle dysfunctions such as crossed eyes (strabismus). As a remarkable side benefit of BOTOX® treatment, many patients noticed that the wrinkles around their eyes were diminished and began asking for further treatments specifically to achieve this effect.
More than any other medical specialty, eye surgeons are specifically trained to perform surgery on the delicate tissues surrounding the eye, which is exactly where BOTOX® treatment is given. To schedule a BOTOX® treatment session with Dr. Kang or Dr. Majlessi, contact our offices in the Washington, DC, Northern Virginia area.
BOTOX® Treatment
BOTOX® treatment, offered at EDOW, serving Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia, is safe and effective. The procedure itself takes only 10 minutes. During treatment, Dr. Kang or Dr. Majlessi will inject a small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic into your overactive facial muscles. Patients usually begin to see the results of smoother, younger-looking skin within three or four days. The effects of treatment last about four months. At that time, treatment will need to be repeated to maintain results.

Before Treatment
Dr. Kang and Dr. Majlessi recommend that patients avoid taking aspirin or using Vitamin E and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication a week before BOTOX® treatment, as these medications may increase bruising.
After Treatment
Patients should avoid massaging the treated area after BOTOX® treatment, as BOTOX® Cosmetic can spread into unwanted areas. However, patients can help work BOTOX® Cosmetic into the muscles by exercising those muscles around the eyes for about 90 minutes following treatment.
Candidates
Candidates for BOTOX® treatment at our Washington, DC, area practice must be between the ages of 18 and 65. BOTOX® treatment should not be administered to individuals that are pregnant, have an infection, or are allergic to BOTOX® Cosmetic. Patients with neurological disorders should also refrain from BOTOX® treatment as they may suffer increased side effects.
Side Effects
Possible side effects of BOTOX® treatment include headache, flu like symptoms, temporary eyelid droop, respiratory infection, and nausea.

Radiesse
Radiesse treatment with dermal filler is seamless and convenient, and can even be applied during your lunch hour. The results are immediate - and may potentially last up to a year or more for many patients. The staying-power of Radiesse can reduce the need for additional treatments, which saves patients time and money when comparing with other fillers. Radiesse has the capability of regenerating your healthy, youthful appearance while embellishing your existing features usually giving way to a heightened sense of confidence and appeal. Radiesse is comprised of calcium-based microspheres that are enclosed within a water-based gel.
Juvederm
Juvederm is gel made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance produced in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Juvederm dermal filler is injected underneath the skin to instantly renew your skin’s volume and to diminish facial wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm is usually used to treat patients that have moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Juvederm is a quick and relatively easy process to endure as the injection itself takes about 15 minutes.
