Progression in cataract surgery technology has been one of the greatest advancements in modern medicine, and has significantly heightened the quality of life of our patients. The surgeons at Eye Doctors of Washington have performed thousands of surgical cataract treatments and are nationally and internationally recognized for their documented achievements in refractive surgery. There are two main types of cataract surgery extraction performed by board-certified ophthalmologists: “phacoemulsification” (phaco) and conventional “extracapsular cataract extraction” (ECCE). In both types of cataract surgery, an Intraocular Lens is usually inserted. The major difference between the two is that phaco is achieved through a foldable lens while ECCE places a lens that is not.
