BOTOX® Cosmetic was originally approved for the treatment of eye spasms and the correction of double vision or strabismus (lazy eye) in children during the 1980s. Since then it has been found to reduce wrinkles for smoother, younger looking skin. BOTOX® treatment is offered by Dr. Paul C. Kang at our offices serving Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and surrounding areas to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and brow.
BOTOX® Cosmetic, manufactured by Allergan, Inc., is a purified protein derived from botulinum bacterium type A. When injected directly into overactive facial muscles, BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to relax the facial muscles, thereby reducing or eliminating the appearance of wrinkles.

BOTOX® was originally introduced to the world in the 1980’s by ophthalmologists as a treatment for uncontrollable facial and eyelid spasms, as well as for eye muscle dysfunctions such as crossed eyes (strabismus). As a remarkable side benefit of BOTOX® treatment, many patients noticed that the wrinkles around their eyes were diminished and began asking for further treatments specifically to achieve this effect.
More than any other medical specialty, eye surgeons are specifically trained to perform surgery on the delicate tissues surrounding the eye, which is exactly where BOTOX® treatment is given. To schedule a BOTOX® treatment session with Dr. Kang, contact our offices in the Washington, DC, Northern Virginia area.
BOTOX® treatment, offered at EDOW, serving Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia, is safe and effective. The procedure itself takes only 10 minutes. During treatment, Dr. Kang will inject a small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic into your overactive facial muscles. Patients usually begin to see the results of smoother, younger-looking skin within three or four days. The effects of treatment last about four months. At that time, treatment will need to be repeated to maintain results.
Dr. Kang recommends that patients avoid taking aspirin or using Vitamin E and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication a week before BOTOX® treatment, as these medications may increase bruising.
Patients should avoid massaging the treated area after BOTOX® treatment, as BOTOX® Cosmetic can spread into unwanted areas. However, patients can help work BOTOX® Cosmetic into the muscles by exercising those muscles around the eyes for about 90 minutes following treatment.
Candidates for BOTOX® treatment at our Washington, DC, area practice must be between the ages of 18 and 65. BOTOX® treatment should not be administered to individuals that are pregnant, have an infection, or are allergic to BOTOX® Cosmetic. Patients with neurological disorders should also refrain from BOTOX® treatment as they may suffer increased side effects.
Possible side effects of BOTOX® treatment include headache, flu like symptoms, temporary eyelid droop, respiratory infection, and nausea.
