JUVEDERM®

At Eye Doctors of Washington, Dr. Mary Catherine Fischer offers our patients a facial filler known as Juvederm®. It is an injectible gel used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds like those lines that extend from your nose to the corners of your mouth (often referred to as parentheses).

HISTORY

Click here for SpecialsIn the 1930s, medical researchers at Columbia University found that one of the chief functions of hyaluronic acid is to maintain skin volume and hydration. By the 1990s, hyaluronic acid began to be used for facial tissue enhancement. It is hyaluronic acid that is the main ingredient in Juvederm®.
In a clinical study, Juvederm® was compared with another dermal filler. The subjects had Juvederm® injected into the nasolabial fold on one side of their faces and the other filler injected on the other side. After scientific analysis, the researchers concluded that Juvederm® did a superior job of lifting the fold. When asked which side of their faces looked better, 88% of the subjects chose the side treated with Juvederm®.

How Does it Work?

One of the main reasons Juvederm® is more effective than its competitors is that it is “cross linked.” In its natural form, the body metabolizes hyaluronic acid in a few hours. Cross linking is a process that chemically binds the individual chains of the acid so that it lasts much longer once injected inside the face. It is this cross-linking that is also responsible for Juvederm’s gel-like substance.

Juvederm’s hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, allowing it to add new volume under the surface of skin folds. Hyaluronic acid causes the skin to create new collagen, a protein that becomes less plentiful in the skin with age, and it also prevents the breakdown of collagen that is already present.

The Procedure

The transparent Juvederm® gel is gently eased under your skin using a small syringe in a matter of minutes. The gel instantly adds volume to the wrinkles and folds in the treatment area. There is minimal recovery, so make an appointment to stop by Eye Doctors of Washington for treatment on the way home from work or the gym and get right back to your life with a refreshed look.

Side Effects

Typical side effects include temporary redness, pain and tenderness during injection, and swelling and bruising at the injection sites. More serious side effects include facial lumps and bumps known as granulomas. Juvéderm® should not be used in patients with severe allergies, particularly those who have allergies to bacterial proteins or patients with a history of anaphylaxis.
