Refractive, Cornea & Cataract Surgeon

Dr. Shah is a nationally regarded and highly experienced fellowship-trained and board-certified cataract, cornea and LASIK eye surgeon. She has been recognized for her skills and experience in cataract and refractive surgery by her peers and regularly honored as a Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine.

Dr. Shah’s expertise includes laser-assisted cataract surgery (Catalys) using presbyopia correcting and light adjustable lenses as well as refractive surgery (LASIKPRK and ICL). Dr. Shah remains on the forefront of treatment for complex anterior segment pathology with expertise in collagen crosslinking and full and partial thickness corneal transplants (DSEK, DMEK), intrastromal corneal ring segments (INTACS), ocular surface reconstruction, and amniotic membrane grafting. Her practice has a unique focus on dry eye utilizing the latest evidence-based therapeutics (including Lipiflow and TearCare). Dr. Shah also provides general comprehensive ophthalmology care to her patients.

Dr. Shah has a passion for innovation and research. She continues to serve as a principal investigator for clinical trials and is a key opinion leader in ophthalmology, regularly leading continuing medical education courses for other clinicians. She has authored dozens of first-author peer-reviewed scientific publications. She is an active member and contributor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and Cornea Society.  

As the president-elect at Washington D.C. Metropolitan Ophthalmological Society, Dr Shah was elected by her peers to serve on the executive board.  Prior to joining Eye Doctors of Washington, Dr. Shah served as an attending physician at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai for several years.   She currently sees patients at our Chevy Chase, MD  and Washington D.C. locations.

A native of Northern Virginia, Dr Shah graduated with honors from the University of Virginia as an Echols Scholar. She earned her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was awarded a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship and honors including the Oliver Holmes Prize for Excellence in Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Foundation Excellence Award. Dr. Shah concurrently attended Johns Hopkins University on a Reed-Frost Scholarship where she obtained a Master of Public Health. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania.  A graduate of the cornea fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary / Harvard Medical School, she was distinguished as a Heed Fellow, the nation’s most prestigious ophthalmology award. Dr Shah is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
